A finished showcase from the early 1900's area
Museum of London, London, England
GEMS STUDIO has recently produced 167 custom made cutaway bodies for five new galleries launching at Museum of London late May 2010.
The team at GEMS STUDIO worked alongside their sister company proportion>london, who won the contract back in September 2009, conferring with the museum’s curators and conservators to plan and refine the costume bodies as the project developed.
Most of the bodies produced for the museum are cutaway style, rightfully allowing the clothing the take centre stage. Using a variety of standard mannequins and forms as start points, the team attended meetings at the museum to measure and mark up each potential figure. These were later customised back at the workshops, taking into account differing historical fashion and body shapes.
Once body-shapes were correct, the garments were final fitted and figures marked up for removal of any areas that would be seen, thus creating an “invisible” mounting form for the costumes.
